The Mothers’ Journey

  • There will always be young women giving birth for the first time in this world and they will always want to know more and, prepare themselves for the unknown and remarkable event of giving birth.

Kundalini yoga and meditation contain an ancient and wholistic set of practices that address the workings of the mind, body and spirit as a single unit. They offer a perfect set of tools to equip any woman to know herself better, including her infinite self, and to deal with the stress and adversity of raising a family. In addition Yogi Bhajan, master of Kundalini yoga, highlighted many ancient principles on the nature of man, woman and child which reawaken us to be who we were born to be.

Women in the pregnant state develop specific needs and qualities which require a Kundalini yoga instructor to be especially trained to address the issues.

The Mother’s Journey is a course which prepares female teachers and leaders to impart information and self-help techniques for a more enjoyable journey through pregnancy and labour and to create supportive environments where pregnant women feel free to be themselves and share their enhanced feelings and experiences with each other.

New course dates will be announced soon

Course Outline: The Mother’s Journey covers topics that range from pre-conceptional care and consciousness to care of the mother and baby in the 40 day period after the delivery. The course is primarily intended to equip the trainees with knowledge and techniques that enable her to teach Kundalini yoga and meditation to pregnant women. Another objective of the course is to share information about what the new mother is going and could go through, in the mother’s journey, in a way that she feels empowered and happy and able to face new and unexpected internal and external situations.

The other major objective of the course is to share the ancient and universal wisdom from the yogic tradition, which has largely been lost in the West. This includes principles of living, daily practices, recipes, etc. None of the information provided during the course is intended to constitute or substitute medical advice which is regarded as essential, especially when symptoms deviate from the normal.

There will be an exam upon completing all three weekends and then you will be certified to teach at the end of the course. Insurance cover will be available and we are aiming to have KYTA CEU qualifications and ultimately a seal from KRI. An attendance at 6 Kundalini yoga classes is a pre-requisite of the course if you are not a Kundalini yoga teacher.

The teachers on the course are:

Carolyn Cowan is a charismatic and empowering teacher and lives in London with her husband and two children who were both born at home. Carolyn worked as a doula for three years until 2002, is a specialist in overcoming fear during pregnancy and dealing with pain in labour. She has produced a successful DVD Kundalini Yoga for a Conscious Pregnancy and has been teaching Kundalini yoga since 1998.

Satya Kaur is one of the founding directors of the international Karam Kriya School, Yoga Productions and the Quinta do Rajo, in Portugal. She has been teaching Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan since 1981 and training teachers since 2001. Satya trained and worked as a registered midwife between 1991 and 2000, in Haringey, North London. She founded and managed the Kriya Centre, a community and spiritual education centre, in London between 2000 and 2007.
In recent years she has been using Myth-a-Drama as a means of accessing and playing with one’s hidden and creative potential. This, in her view. complements the discipline of the yogic lifestyle.  Satya Kaur has a down to earth approach to most things and therefore her teaching style is simple and engaging. Satya is married to Shiv Chran Singh and they have three sons and one gorgeous grand-daughter, Lola!

Elena O’Keeffe is an enthusiastic, insightful and versatile teacher. She has studied Kundalini Yoga since meeting Yogi Bhajan in 1999. She took the path of teaching pregnancy yoga in 2004, inspired by Conscious Pregnancy trainers and by her own mother, who is a professional midwife.
Elena’s pregnancy classes and partner’s preparation workshops were offered within NHS settings and gained a good reputation amongst West Berkshire midwives. Her teaching is based on the recognition and respect of the emotional and psychological needs of others, even when those others may not recognise or express their own needs.
She divides her time between running GDV LIFE diagnostic modality (a holistic health check up utilising computerised bio-field assessment) and charity work, helping Russian orphans and vulnerable mothers who are at risk of abandoning their children.
Elena and her husband Darryl O’Keeffe have two children, a 7 year old son and a daughter who they sadly lost in 2008. www.i-sky.net
