The Addictive Personality
My skills as a counsellor working with the Addictive Personality come largely from personal experience.
I cleaned up from drug and alcohol dependency in 1991. I stopped drinking, smoking and taking drugs all on the same day. Not something that I would advise, but it was the route I took. I have always been extreme and this was a point in my life where it was all or nothing.
It took three months for me to be able to sleep properly, I came out in boils all over my body, I was insanely angry and frankly, a nightmare to be within several feet of.
I went into therapy quite quickly. It was badly needed. I had used the endless substance abuse to cover up a nest of angst and dysfunction. Over the years I untangled the history, made amends, learned to breathe, and am continue working with myself to master the endless drama that is the Addictive Personality.
My journey took me into rehab when I was 6 years clean to deal with my childhood and the repercussions, into Yoga Teacher Training, and through that intensely transforming experience into counselling and teaching, training yoga teachers and running workshops on empowerment.
I consider myself to be in recovery, and I consider the recovery from addiction to be something that needs constant attention. The Addictive Personality is a wily beast. It is not tamed for long. Honesty, personal practice and vigilance are needed at all times to ensure that the road is well travelled, that the beast does not rise up to ensnare each of us again, that we keep peeling away the layers that screen us from our own destructive nature.
So my counselling services in this regard deal with all the above. My experiences will have been utterly different from yours but the illness has a form to it that can be laid bare, honed and worked with. We all walk a similar line, just the experiences and the views change.
I work with words, contracts, meditation, posture, patience and a very open mind. I make no judgements about what you have done, think about or long for, but if you are suffering from your thought processes, your mind or your fears then I work with all of it to bring you to a place where you are aware of your strengths, give you an armoury of tools to play with that are based on your personal needs and work with you to give you the confidence you need to step back into the world knowing that the beast never sleeps but it can be tamed.
